Answer a few questions: the tool writes the two documents every French website must publish, tailored to your situation. Nothing is sent: everything happens in your browser.
First time? The steps, one by one
Answer the four groups of questions: who publishes the site, its identity, the web host, what the site does.
The two documents are written beside them as you go: “Legal notice” and “Privacy”.
With “Copy for my site”, paste each text into a page of your site. You need two pages.
Add a link to both pages in the footer, so they can be reached from everywhere.
Tips
Your answers stay in this browser: you can come back later to finish or correct.
Redo the documents when the site changes: new host, newsletter, shop, statistics tool.
“Copy the HTML code” helps if your site editor loses the headings when pasting.
Unsure about online sales or sensitive data? Have a legal professional read them.
The documents are written in French: it is the language required for a site aimed at the French public.
These documents are templates based on the laws in force (LCEN, GDPR, French Data Protection Act) and the CNIL's recommendations. They do not replace advice from a legal professional: read them through and adapt them to what you really do, especially for online sales or sensitive data.
Good to know
Does my site really need these pages?
Yes. A legal notice is compulsory for every site published in France (law on confidence in the digital economy): fines of up to €75,000 for a person and €375,000 for an organisation. As soon as the site collects personal data (form, newsletter, memberships, audience measurement), the GDPR also requires a privacy policy.
Where do I publish them on my site?
Create two pages, “Mentions légales” and “Politique de confidentialité”, and link to both from the footer, visible on every page.
WordPress: Pages › Add New, then paste with “Copy for my site”; headings and lists become blocks. WordPress also offers a privacy page (Settings › Privacy) that you can replace with this text.
Other tools (Wix, Jimdo, hand-made site): paste the text, or use “Copy the HTML code” in an HTML block.
Do I need a cookie banner?
Only if the site sets cookies that are not strictly necessary: Google Analytics, YouTube videos, Google Maps, embedded social media posts. Audience measurement set up without cookies or tracking (Matomo configured per the CNIL, Plausible) does not need one. The tool tells you based on your choices.
Local-law association: what changes?
In Alsace and Moselle, associations are usually registered with the court's register of associations (not declared at the prefecture). They then have no RNA number: you give the court and the registration number (volume and folio). Tick the matching box in step 2.
Are my answers sent anywhere?
No. The documents are written by your browser. Your answers are kept on this device only, so you do not have to type them again; the “Clear everything” link deletes them.
